We understand how confusing & frustrating insurance issues can be, but you must be aware that vision discount plans & medical insurances are different. Our eye doctors are providers for many medical insurance plans.
Vision discount plans typically cover a routine, wellness eye examination every year or two. Medical issues are treated separately and are billed through a medical insurance plan as often as medically necessary. Why is this so complicated? We have the same question but are legally obligated to follow the rules that are set forth by your insurance company. Call us and we will strive to help answer any further questions you may have: (540) 215-8361.
A wellness exam is one where you simply want to have your eyeglasses and/or contact lens prescription evaluated and have no specific problems or complaints related to your eyes that would need to be managed or treated. The wellness exam includes screening for eye disease but not treating eye disease. For a wellness exam, we accept most vision discount plans, including VSP, EyeMed, and Davis Vision, but as an out-of-network provider. This means that you will pay us at the time of service. We have forms that we’ll be happy to fill out for you to send to the company for reimbursement. You may not be fully reimbursed and your reimbursement will depend on the benefits for which you are eligible. You should know that even if you see an in-network provider, more than likely, you will still have an out of pocket expense on eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
A comprehensive medical eye exam is one where you currently have a condition and/or problem with your eyes that we will manage and/or treat. Some examples include having diabetes, red eyes, eye discomfort, cataracts, dry eyes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. For a medical eye exam, we are currently providers for:
Medicare
Anthem PPO
Aetna / Coventry PPO
United Healthcare PPO
We will be more than happy to submit the claim for your medical eye exam as well. Call (540) 215-8361 and we will strive to help answer any further questions you may have.
